Gear list for Atlas Mountain Race

Whether you’re preparing for the same race or just looking for inspiration, I’ve put together a list of all the equipment I carried for the Atlas Mountain Race. Even though I tried to include every little detail, I’m sure I forgot a few things. If you want to use this as inspiration, keep in mind that I have a lot of experience and I finished the race in about five days. If it takes you longer, you’ll probably need more stuff.

For context – the race takes place in mid-February in Morocco, which meant a lot of darkness and cold nights. The temperature dropped to -3 °C, and on the first night I rode through snow and ice. During the day it was the opposite – warm and dry – so I also planned for more water capacity. I could carry up to three and a half liters, but I never had to use it all. Resupply is also tricky, so I preferred to carry extra food.

I don’t like going super ultra-light, especially for a race I’m riding for the first time, because my priority is simply to finish. Honestly, I feel like I generally need more gear for a race than for a trip. In a race, I have to be able to ride in any weather. On a trip, I can afford to bring less clothing and just hide from the worst conditions. Still, I tried not to carry too much unnecessary stuff.
