Ergon SMC Core – A Saddle with Shock-Absorbing Foam

A saddle with suspension? That's one way to describe the Ergon SMC Core. Instead of a conventional thin shell, it's built around a special sandwich construction that absorbs vibrations and increases comfort on a mountain bike. For testing I took it to one of the toughest MTB races around – the 1000 Miles Adventure. I hadn't spent much time on it beforehand, which meant my body hadn't adapted to it yet – a real risk going into a race like that.
📏 Saddle Construction
Due to anatomical differences between riders, separate versions are produced for men and women. You can choose from two widths based on your sit bone distance. Purpose-built measurement tools exist for this, but a piece of cardboard works just as well. In the narrower width it weighs 347 grams – heavier than most saddles, which is presumably why Ergon categorises it under MTB touring.
What sets it apart from other saddles is its sandwich construction. Between the top and bottom sections sits a special foam layer that serves two functions:
- It absorbs vibrations while riding. Whatever your tyres and seatpost don't filter out, this foam takes care of.
- As you pedal, the saddle adapts to your movement, preventing additional pressure points.


Down the centreline of the saddle there is of course a relief channel for soft tissue comfort. Ergon are well-established ergonomics specialists, and the saddle holds a "back-friendly" certification.
Because of the foam layer the saddle sits higher than a regular one – remember to lower your seatpost accordingly.
🚵 Experience on a Long Ride
As I mentioned in the intro, I took this saddle to the 1000 Miles Adventure, which is an excellent test for any piece of equipment. The terrain is extremely rough, sleep is scarce, your body barely has time to recover, and the distance is simply enormous. I'd ridden the saddle very little beforehand because I was using a different bike, and I was genuinely worried my body wouldn't be adapted to it.
In the end I have to say I was very happy with it. It was only near the finish that I realised my backside hadn't bothered me at all. During the final stretches of singletrack I sat as solidly as if glued to it, with no urge to shift around.
In previous editions I hadn't complained much about saddle discomfort either, but I'll admit that in the last few days I sometimes had to stand on the pedals just to relieve the pressure. After finishing I'd usually find the skin had peeled a bit – that didn't happen this time. The only moment of saddle discomfort I noticed in the race was after sleeping barely ninety minutes, when recovery time was simply insufficient. But even then it wasn't serious and passed quickly.

I'd describe the Ergon SMC Core as a suspended saddle. It's simply another layer in the vibration-damping chain – after your tyres, suspension, carbon seatpost, and bib shorts padding.
The fact that the saddle tilts with each pedal stroke also helps relieve pressure on the sit bones.
Something else I noticed only after a few days back home – my back wasn't sore at all. I can't say for certain how much the saddle contributed to that, but in previous mountain races I think I fared worse in that regard, despite having a fully slammed fork and a stem angled downward. A saddle has a significant influence on back comfort – once I rode with a saddle that was slightly off-angle and the discomfort was severe.
🤔 Who It's Not For
I've been enthusiastic so far, but the saddle is certainly not for everyone. If you ride regularly and don't experience any discomfort, there may simply be no reason to buy it. It's heavier and more expensive, so if you're not solving a problem, it's an unnecessary investment.
I can also imagine that the saddle's tilting motion absorbs some energy that would otherwise go into the pedals. That's why performance-oriented riders tend to prioritise stiffness for the most efficient power transfer. If you're racing XC marathons where output matters, a conventional rigid saddle will probably serve you better.
For bikepacking tours or ultra-endurance events where you're spending tens of hours in the saddle, however, the extra comfort will ultimately improve your performance.

🧑⚖️ Conclusion
My expectations weren't particularly high, but the saddle genuinely impressed me. On shorter distances I didn't notice any difference – it wasn't a case of sitting down and suddenly feeling like I was floating on air. But over long distances, that subtle vibration damping really paid off and I had more comfort in the saddle than ever before.
Saddle comfort certainly doesn't rest on the saddle alone – other factors need to be dialled in too – but the Ergon SMC Core can definitely help. For me it worked very well and even took the edge off some remaining back discomfort.
Given the higher price and weight, it may not appeal to riders who primarily do shorter routes and have no current issues with saddle comfort.
