Gear list for Hellenic Mountain Race

Compared to the Atlas Mountain Race, I didn’t change much equipment, as I already know a lot of gear works for me and there’s no need to keep experimenting. I mainly considered at the last minute what to take based on the weather forecast. With an expected time of up to five days, the forecast could be relied on more or less, and I could have left some gear at home. In the end, I packed more durable waterproof outer layers and even a sleeping pad, because I didn’t feel great before the start and the forecast wasn’t perfect.

As for bike components, this time I chose narrower tires since half the route is on paved surfaces. I also swapped the pedals for Xpedo, as the previous ones had a lot of … issues. I’m not bringing a handlebar bar either, which also saves quite a bit of weight. On those climbs, the weight will matter.

I also pared down clothing a bit, since I expect nights to be warmer than in Atlas.

Regarding bags, I’m taking the new Apidura stem bags, where I’ll carry most of my food. I won’t have a vest or backpack. Water goes in the frame and one half-liter bottle in the jersey pocket. The lower frame bag probably wasn’t strictly necessary, but I decided to take it for extra space, so I wouldn’t have to overstuff the pockets. Since I added a few things at the last minute, it really came in handy.

And how did it all turn out? The Hellenic Mountain Race report is already done.

My rig for Hellenic Mountain Race

Base clothing

This is what I’ll be wearing for the whole ride. I’ll just take off my cycling shoes before getting into the sleeping bag… Compared to Atlas, basically nothing changes – just the bags and the jersey. The originals were already quite stretched out.
