Ortlieb Toptube-Bag

If the Fuel-Pack was too small for you, Ortlieb has prepared a new product, the Toptube-Bag. This top tube bag fits half a litre more volume – 1.5 litres total. In cut and most features it's very similar to its smaller sibling – two-magnet closure, waterproof and one internal pocket.

The increased size is of course reflected in weight – the bag weighs 250 grams, which is 90 grams more than the Fuel-Pack. Although you can still save grams by using bolts on the frame 👇

🎒 Construction

You can attach the bag to the frame using:

  • frame bolts - if you have them
  • classic straps - for MTB you'll probably need an extension strap, which is NOT included
  • using a quick-release - which IS included

You'll appreciate the quick-release especially if you frequently handle the bag or want to swap it between bikes. The system is compatible with the Fuel-Pack too, so you can swap the bag itself.

According to tables it has a water resistance rating of "only" IP53, which is because to meet a higher limit it would have to be resistant to water spraying from all sides. Due to the magnetic closure construction it can't be covered with water from below, but that doesn't matter much in rain.

The magnetic closure is reliable and the bag never opened on its own. Similarly to the Fuel-Pack, I would complain that the magnets don't always find each other well and I have to guide them more. This happens especially when the bag is fuller and happens at both corners. I recommend watching the YouTube video ☝️ where you can see the bags in action.

🗄️ Contents

The bag really holds a lot – 1.5 litres is more than sufficient capacity. On the lid there are even attachments for securing a phone using a rubber holder, though I admit I didn't use this feature much. Securing the phone isn't exactly simple – especially if you have a larger one – and you can't take it in your hand while riding. Plus I'd be worried about it in rougher terrain. On the road or light terrain it shouldn't be a problem. I even tried shaking it significantly and the phone held.

It's not really an ideal place to look at your phone for navigation either, because it's too close to you. I'd probably prefer a pocket instead of this system.

The problem is the bag's actual size, where in certain situations I rub it with my knees. This happens mainly when riding standing up or when using the dropper post. When riding in the usual position it wasn't such a problem, though occasionally I bumped into it. Of course it depends on the specific frame, geometry and your proportions.

📐 Summary

The Ortlieb Toptube-Bag is especially suitable if you travel more on rough terrain or for urban cycling – in fact, in Ortlieb's promotional materials you'll find the Fuel-Pack on a gravel bike and the Toptube-Bag on an urban bike. It can also be useful for some bulkier item you want at hand – like a camera – and you don't have space for it elsewhere.

For sportier bikepacking I'd rather go for the Fuel-Pack from the pair.

For both bags of course all the advantages you find with Ortlieb apply – the bag is robust, your contents will stay dry in rain and you get a five-year warranty.

Advantages

  • Internal pocket
  • Waterproofing against rain
  • Stays in place

Disadvantages

  • Longer strap not included
  • Magnets better to guide
  • Perhaps too large

Overall rating: 4/5
