Bryton Gardia R300L – Safety with a Cycling Radar

From almost every corner of the cycling community I hear the same thing – I won't ride on roads without a radar! So today let's look at how the device actually works, when it helps, when it may not be perfectly accurate, and whether it's compatible with bikepacking bags. All of that on the Bryton Gardia R300L.

📐 Hardware

The radar is somewhat larger and heavier than a typical rear light. It weighs 70 grams (96 grams with the mount). The upper section houses the light; the lower section is the radar face – it transmits and receives signals, and you should keep it clean. The design is excellent in my opinion. It charges via USB-C. Battery life is 8 hours at maximum brightness, 17 hours flashing, and 24 hours in radar-only mode without the light. In terms of charging, a full charge from a 10,000 mAh power bank took around 20% of the bank's capacity.

In the box you'll find two different mounts. One attaches to a seatpost and is compatible with round, aero, and D-shaped profiles. There's also a mount that fits directly under the saddle. How well that works depends heavily on how much seatpost you have exposed – the rear wheel mustn't obstruct the radar. The device should be angled perpendicular to the ground.

You can pair it with a bike computer (for example the Bryton S810, though it's also compatible with Garmin and other brands) or smartwatch, or connect it directly to Bryton's own mobile app. I'd recommend always installing the app at minimum, since some useful features can only be enabled there. As a light alone it works without any pairing at all, and the button lets you manually cycle through modes.

✈️ How It Works

Just like a real radar. The unit emits radio waves that bounce off objects, and then analyses the returning signal. Software then identifies moving vehicles from that data. This means it's not limited by light conditions – it works equally well in daylight or complete darkness. During testing it had no issues with fog or rain either.

Vehicles are detected up to 190 metres away – though that only applies on a straight road. In bends or over a hill, the radar can't see through solid obstacles, so some vehicles may disappear from the display or appear quite suddenly close behind you. The radar also has no idea which lane you're in. If two parallel roads run side by side, it may show you vehicles travelling on the neighbouring road.

All activity is displayed on your bike computer or in the app. When a vehicle appears behind you, the radar beeps and shows a dot at the edge of the screen. The dot moves closer as the vehicle approaches, and the screen border is highlighted in orange or red depending on the vehicle's speed. Once the car has passed and nothing else is behind you, the border turns green and fades out. The cycle repeats with each new vehicle.

The radar only shows vehicles that are moving relative to you. If a car catches up with you and then matches your pace while waiting to overtake, it disappears from the display. It also can't detect vehicles approaching at more than 120 km/h relative to your speed – a situation that in practice only occurs on motorways, where cyclists aren't supposed to be anyway.

The radar can't distinguish between a car and a lorry. For that matter, a train shows up as a series of multiple objects in a row. It can detect several vehicles simultaneously, but accuracy depends on how closely spaced they are.

🚨 Gardia in Practice

I have to say the accuracy genuinely surprised me in a positive way. In theory you can encounter two issues – ghosts and false negatives. A ghost is the better scenario: the radar claims something is there, but nothing is. I've seen reviews of the Bryton Gardia where people report ghosts every hour, but my experience was different – a firmware update may be responsible. I had very few ghosts over approximately 700 kilometres of riding. Occasionally something appeared that seemed suspicious, but turned out to be a vehicle far in the distance that had then turned off.

As for false negatives – where the radar claims nothing is behind you but something then overtakes – I experienced zero. The only theoretical case is a vehicle behind you travelling at exactly your speed, but that's a limitation of the technology itself.

Is it a "game changer"? People rode without radars for decades, so it's clearly not essential – but on open roads I genuinely appreciate it. It doesn't replace paying attention to your surroundings, and I still look back regularly, but:

  • I feel more comfortable in the drops. I'm not a fan of being in an aggressive position when traffic is around and I'm not in a great position to react quickly. When I know nothing is behind me, I'll happily drop into the drops.
  • I dodge potholes, which means I swerve more than on a mountain bike. It's reassuring to know nothing is approaching in those moments, because I'm often focused entirely on the road surface ahead of me.
  • Sometimes I simply get absorbed in the ride and stop paying as much attention to what's around me. When something overtakes me in that moment, my heart nearly stops. With the radar, I know about the car earlier.
  • It's especially useful in strong winds, when vehicles are often inaudible. In bends and during calm conditions I sometimes hear a car before it appears on the radar.

Overall it's a very pleasant addition, and I'd think of it similarly to a helmet. People rode without helmets for many years too, and there were plenty of serious injuries as a result. The radar keeps me safer and also encourages me to run my light during the day – something I didn't always do before.

Once every few hours the radar momentarily drops and reconnects – a brief blink on the display. This happens to me with a Garmin Edge 840. Hard to say whether it's the computer or the radar at fault.

On a mountain bike I probably wouldn't bother, since there's far less traffic on trails and mud can thoroughly confuse the radar. When I had some mud on the face, it kept showing a phantom vehicle behind me. A quick wipe and it was fine again.

📱 Gardia App

The mobile app is the weakest part of the whole package. Initial pairing was a struggle – I had to restart both Bluetooth and the app several times before it connected. The UX isn't well polished – even after switching the radar off, the app still showed a "start ride" button.

After extended use the connection became more reliable, but the app itself is noticeably slow, occasionally crashes on launch, and behaves oddly during navigation. Pairing with the bike computer works without issues. I'm glad I can limit my app use to firmware updates and initial setup, neither of which I'll need to repeat often.

⛰️ Using It for Bikepacking

Since I wanted to use the radar while bikepacking, I also had to figure out how to mount it on a saddle bag. The mounts supplied by Bryton won't work in this scenario. I ended up using the clip from a Fenix BC05R V2.0 light, securing it to the Gardia mount with cable ties. I have to say it works quite well. Results depend on the specific saddle bag and how full it is. On the Apidura Racing Saddle Pack it worked very well, though on rough terrain there may be some wobble, which can affect radar performance slightly. Even so, it functioned correctly.

It's a shame Bryton doesn't include a clip-style mount in the box or sell one separately. I've seen some third-party solutions on Etsy, though the options specifically for the Gardia are limited.

Bikepacking usability is also helped by the impressive battery life. The advertised 17 hours with flashing light actually proved slightly conservative in practice – over a 500-kilometre ride, it lasted closer to 18 hours. That's enough for a full day; just plug it in every evening.

For a bikepacking race I'd probably switch the light off and use radar-only mode to save battery – both in the radar itself and in the bike computer.

🔮 Additional Features

In the app you can enable the radar's light to change its flash frequency as a vehicle approaches.

There is also a brake light function: when you brake, it switches from flashing to a constant beam at higher brightness. After a few seconds it reverts to the previous mode.

Via the bike computer, you can set the light to automatically adjust its brightness based on ambient light conditions, using the light sensor built into the computer.

🤜 Conclusion

Overall I'm very happy with this radar. It has plenty of features that make road riding more pleasant and safer. I experienced very few ghost detections, and not once did it fail to alert me to a vehicle. It works in rain and fog – precisely the conditions where risk is highest. The biggest downside for me is the Android app; on iOS it reportedly works much better.

If you spend significant time on roads – whether racing, commuting, or simply going on long rides – I'd recommend the radar.
